How does a Child access and use the Service?

A Child may only use the Service with the prior consent of a parent or legal guardian (“Parent”) or of their school or school district (“School”) acting on behalf of the Parent in connection with legitimate educational purposes. A Parent’s or School’s consent is required for the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information from Children, and STF will not collect, use or disclose any such personal information without such consent. The School may consent to the collection, use or disclosure of personal information from Children by entering into an agreement to use the Service.

Children cannot access or use the Service without first being added by their School or a School official. Children access the Service through either through a student information system or single sign-on that the School already uses, or, if the student’s School does not use such a system, through a separate username and password.

If we learn that a Child’s personal information has been collected through the Service without the appropriate consent of the Child’s School or Parent, we will take appropriate steps to delete this information. If you are a Parent and discover that your Child has a registered account with the Service without a School or Parent’s consent, please contact the Child’s School to request that we delete that Child’s personal information from our systems.

What personal information do we collect about a Child?

Information provided through use of the Service

STF only collects information from a Child that is reasonably necessary for the Child to use the Service for educational purposes authorized by a School.

STF collects personal information in connection with visits to and use of the Service. The personal information we collect includes the information listed below:

A School creating a Child Account will provide the following information regarding a Child:

• Name
• Date of birth
• School enrollment information such as grade and school name
• Student email address
• Student identification numbers
• Gender
• Demographic information such as race, ethnicity, economic classifications
• Educational classifications such as English language learner, individualized education plan, gifted/talented
• Corrective eyewear information
• State, region, province, and country of residence
• (optional) Disability information
• (optional) English language learner proficiency level
• (optional) Whether the child has been diagnosed with dyslexia
• (optional) Independent reading level and literacy assessment scores

Once a Child Account is created, STF will collect the following information directly from a Child:

• Materials a Child submits, posts, displays, provides, or otherwise makes available on the Service

Information collected automatically

We, our service providers, and our business partners may use cookies and similar tracking technologies to automatically log information about a Child, their computer or mobile device, and their interaction over time with the Service, such as:

• Usage information, such as the browser and operating system a Child is using, all of the areas within our Service that users visit, the time of day they use the Service, approximate regional data from the IP address, system errors, response times, and diagnostic data and random session monitoring for addressing service quality, among other information. Service users can disable cookies at their browser or device’s settings without impairing the functionality of the Service. We do not use cookies or any tracking technologies to direct advertisements to Children.

How We Use Personal Information

STF uses Children’s Personal Information for purposes authorized by their School, as listed below:

• Service delivery. We may use a Child’s Personal Information to:
  • Provide the Service to the Child;
  • Personalize the Service experience; and
  • Provide support for the Service.
• Compliance and protection. We may use a Child’s Personal Information to:
  • Comply with applicable laws, lawful requests, and legal process, such as to respond to subpoenas or requests from government authorities;
  • Protect Our, your, the Child’s, or others’ rights, privacy, safety or property (including by making and defending legal claims) and audit Our internal processes for compliance with legal and contractual requirements or Our internal policies;
  • Enforce the terms and conditions that govern the Service; and
  • Prevent, identify, investigate and deter fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized, unethical or illegal activity, including cyberattacks and identity theft.

To create anonymous, aggregated or de-identified data. We create anonymous, aggregated or de-identified data from a Child’s Personal Information. We make Personal Information into anonymous, aggregated or de-identified data by removing or obscuring information that make the data contained therein personally identifiable to the Child. We use this anonymous, aggregated or de-identified data and may share it with third parties for Our lawful business purposes, including for research and development purposes and to improve the Service.

With consent. We may ask for consent from the School or the Parent to collect, use, or share a Child’s Personal Information for purposes not identified here..

We do not use Children’s Personal Information for marketing or advertising purposes.

How can a School or Parent review and manage a Child’s personal information?

A School can review, manage, or delete a Child’s personal information by contacting us at support@stfvision.org or via the student information or learning management system that the School uses. A Parent should contact their Child’s School to review, manage, or request deletion of their Child’s information.

What personal information of a Child is visible to others using the Service?

No Child’s information is made available or visible generally to the public through the Service. A School or School official (such as a teacher) may view a Child’s information, including learning metrics and grades, through their connected account. Children using the Service cannot view each other’s personal information.

How do we share personal information of a Child?

We may share a Child’s personal information with the following parties or as detailed in our online Notice of STF’s Practices Relating to Children’s Online Privacy or as otherwise agreed to by the School:

• With Schools. We may share personal information of a Child with the Child’s School and School officials of the Child’s School, subject to the agreement between STF and the relevant School.
• Service providers. Third parties that provide services on our behalf or help us operate the Service or our business (such as hosting, information technology, customer support, and email delivery providers). The following service providers may collect or maintain personal information from a Child through the Service:
  • Amazon Web Services, Inc., 410 Terry Ave., N., Seattle, WA 98109-5210
  • Datadog, Inc., 620 8th Ave., 45th Floor, New York, NY 10018
• Professional advisors. Professional advisors, such as lawyers, auditors, bankers and insurers, where necessary in the course of the professional services that they render to us.
• Authorities and others. Law enforcement, government authorities, and private parties, as we believe in good faith to be necessary or appropriate for the compliance and protection purposes described above.
• Business transferees. Acquirers and other relevant participants in business transactions (or negotiations of or due diligence for such transactions) involving a corporate divestiture, merger, consolidation, acquisition, reorganization, sale or other disposition of all or any portion of the business or assets of, or equity interests in, STF (including, in connection with a bankruptcy or similar proceedings).

Note regarding third-party content, links to other sites, and STF content found outside of the Service. Certain content provided through the Service may be hosted and served by third parties. In addition, the Service may link to third-party websites or content over which STF has no control and which are governed by the privacy policies and business practices of those third parties. Please note that STF content may be included on web pages and websites that are not associated with us and over which we have no control. These third parties may independently collect data. STF is not responsible or liable for the privacy practices or business practices of any third party.
